HOMER
Homer is a seaside community of 4,000 residents, with
another 8,000 beyond the city limits, overlooking Kachemak
Bay and the Kenai Mountains. In addition to the downtown
area of Homer, a unique attraction is the Homer Spit, a long,
narrow finger of land jutting 4.5 miles into Kachemak Bay.
The Spit is the home of a small boat harbor with over 700
charter and commercial boat operators year round. Homer
offers all the amenities of a first class small town, with
several art galleries, a movie theatre, bookstores, a natural
history museum, several wonderful restaurants, grocery
stores, plus the security of a hospital, medical clinics,
pharmacies, police and fire departments, and a U.S. Coast
Guard cutter for safety at sea. Local, State and Federal
government offices operate here, as does the Kenai
Peninsula College and Senior Citizens Center.

HOMER'S ECONOMY
Kachemak Bay has been inhabited for thousands of years.
Native Alaskans were drawn to its abundant, diverse land
and marine animals and relatively mild climate. In the 1800s,
homesteaders and coal miners made up the area's population
and Homer became a booming town until the demand for
coal diminished in the early 1900s. Some years later, the
commercial harvest and processing of fish became the
mainstay of the local economy, and Homer became the
commercial and transportation hub of the Southern Kenai
Peninsula. Today, Homer's economy relies on commercial
fishing and the growing tourism industry.

"HALIBUT FISHING CAPITAL OF THE WORLD"
While in Homer enjoy the vast opportunities for halibut and
salmon fishing. Charters are available for fishing trips on
(and across) the bay. Plus, make sure you visit the Fishin'
Hole on the Homer Spit to take advantage of the salmon
runs. Fishing licenses are required for any fishing or
clamming. Homer has some of the finest halibut charter
operators around and Coal Point Trading Company, on the
Homer Spit, will process, freeze, and ship your catch.

KACHEMAK BAY STATE PARK
Kachemak Bay State Park is located across the bay from
Homer, Alaska, and accessible only by boat or plane. Many
species of wildlife live here including black and brown bear,
moose, mountain goat, wolverine, and lynx. Kachemak Bay
State Park comprises over 300,000 acres of pristine
wilderness and is one of the largest coastal parks in the
United States. The park has designated trails, catering to all
levels of hikers, as well as easily traveled alpine tundra.
Weather can be an issue at times so make sure you plan your
hike accordingly. Taking advantage of guiding services in the
park assures a safe and enjoyable day.
